MacDonaghs began the county championship with a 3-17 to 0-15 victory over Nenagh in Toomevara. Manager Billy O'Shea was unable to pick from a full deck with Thomas Cleary,  Thomas Williams, Brian O'Meara and Ray McLoughney all unavailable for selection. The selectors gave championship debuts to Jerome Cahill and Craig Morgan and the county minors vindicated their selection with impressive performances. The Magpies had the aid of a stiff breeze in the opening half but it was Nenagh who drew first blood with a point. Darragh Peters had the sides on level terms and Willie Cleary surged forward to raise a white flag. Nenagh responded with a point   but Jerome Cahill and Niall O'Meara pointed to give MacDonaghs a lead they would never surrender. Cian Darcy had been very unlucky when he latched on to a long delivery and sent a rasper that rattled the crossbar. In the 10th minute Jerome Cahill ghosted in behind the defence to whip a ground ball to the net. MacDonaghs opened a five-point gap but Nenagh had a purple patch coming up to half-time, hitting three points on the trot. However, the Magpies finished the half strongly with Seamus Hennessy landing a massive free and Eoin Hogan driving upfield to raise the last white flag of the half. Interval score: MacDonaghs 1-11 Nenagh 0-7.
The early exchanges of this half were to prove crucial in deciding the outcome of this game. MacDonaghs hit 2-3 without reply in the opening eleven minutes. The industrious James Williams fired one into the onion bag in the 33rd minute and Cian Darcy rifled the sliotar to the net in the 41st minute. Incredibly, the Magpies were now 17 points ahead. Nenagh refused to throw in the towel and hit six unanswered points but never troubled Conor Doheny in the goals. At the final whistle there was a margin of eleven points between the teams. It had been a job well done. All attention now switches to the North championship where Borrisokane will provide the opposition in Gardiner Park on Sunday at 1.00pm. Your support would be appreciated. Team: Conor Doheny, Èanna Hogan, Jack Peters, Stephen Cleary, Willie Cleary (0-1), Seamus Hennessy (0-2), Eoin Hogan (0-2), Craig Morgan (0-1), Justin Cahill (0-2), Jerome Cahill (1-3), Niall O'Meara (0-1), Darragh Peters (0-1), James Williams (1-0), Kieran Cahill and Cian Darcy (1-4). Liam Kennedy RIP
The late Liam Kennedy, Caherdavin, Limerick and formerly The Mill  & Knockearl, Cloughjordan played underage hurling and football with MacDonaghs and also lined out with the senior footballers. In 1968 he won North Rural and Urban Rural hurling medals with the Magpies. In 1970 he was a member of the minor football squad which captured the divisional title. The following year Liam won North and county medals in both minor and U17 hurling. In 1972 he won a North senior football medal and a North minor hurling medal, lining out at full-forward with the hurlers. The same year Liam claimed his second divisional minor football medal as he wore the number one jersey in the "Bearna Baol". Liam joined the staff of Ard Scoil Rís in 1978 as a science and mathematics teacher. There he pioneered hurling at the Limerick School that went on to win four Harty Cups since 2010. He also became actively involved with Na Piarsaigh. During his thirty years of service to the club he coached numerous underage teams and also acted as senior manager. At the time of his passing he was club treasurer. Liam was part of a group in Na Piarsaigh that was known as "The Tipperary Mafia". Former Na Piarsaigh chairman Tim O'Connor descibed him as an "unsung hero for for the club and former workplace " His son Padraic was goalkeeper on the Na Piarsaigh team that won the All-Ireland club title in 2016. At the funeral Mass his other son Darragh began his very eloquent tribute to his father by reading some lines from Liam's favourite poem "John John" by Thomas MacDonagh. Cloughjordan was always very important to Liam .("The savage loves his native shore.") At the end of Mass as Liam's coffin, draped in the Na Piarsaigh and Ard Scoil Rís flags, was carried from the church, Tim Floyd, Tipperary secretary, led the congregration in a rendition of "Slievenamon". To his wife Ann, sons Darragh and Padraic, daughter Deirdre, sisters Kathleen and Mary, brothers John, Martin, Pat and Ger & extended family sympathy is extended.
