Senior

In the third round of the County championship, we play Roscrea this Sunday, 7th September, in Nenagh, at 4.00pm.  We need a win or a draw to advance to the knockout stages.

Junior ‘A’

We made our exit from the championship in the semi-final, losing 1-24 to 1-15 against Kiladangan in Toomevara. We trailed 0-15 to 0-10 at the break.  A Michael Hennelly goal in the thirty-sixth minute kept us in the hunt. We were still in the game with six minutes to go with Kiladangan ahead by five points. However, we conceded a goal a minute later, and the game was over as a contest.

Team: Kevin Naughnane (0-2 frees), Paul Molloy, Eanna Hogaan, Sean Quinlan, Paddy Ryan, Eamonn  Coonan, David O’Sullivan, Brian O’Meara, Cillian Healy (0-3), Jack Mulcahy (0-1 free), Johnny Naughnane, Fiachradh Ahearne Woods, Michael Hennelly (1-2), Conor Doheny, Eoin Carroll (0-5, 0-3 frees) Subs: Kevin Shinners (0-2), Oisín O’Meara (0-1), Niall Shinners, Kevin Oakley, Cormac Gaynor.

Junior ‘B’

We gave a very good account of ourselves against Silvermines (2nd team)  in the quarter-final of the championship in Dolla. We came out the wrong side of a 2-19 to 3-10 scoreline against last year’s County finalists. In the first half, the home team played with the aid of the light breeze into the scoring goal. the opening minutes, MacDonaghs were dealt a blow when Cian Hayes (our best forward against Templederry) was forced to retire with a broken collarbone injury. At the end of the first quarter, the sides were level with MacDonaghs posting 1-1 in reply to 0-4 from the hosts. Martin Grace had found the net for the Magpies. At the interval, Silvermines led by 2-11 to 3-4. Cormac Mannion scored our second goal from a penalty after Lucas Jones had been fouled inside the large square. Our third green flag is a contender for goal of the year. Matthew Moyles won the possession in the middle of the field, slalomed his way through the Silvermines  defence, and buried the sliotar in the net to rousing cheers from the KIlruane supporters. A superb point from Cormac Mannion had drawn admiration from friend and foe. Cormac flicked the ball with a Cian Lynchesque effort into his hand and tossed it over his opponent’s head before bisecting the posts. Dolla has never witnessed such a white flag. It deserved two points.

In the second half, the Magpies fought doggedly to stay in the game and never let Silvermines out of their sight. A fourth goal, which would have made for a grandstand finish, proved elusive, and Silvermines held on for a six-point victory. It had been an admirable effort from our lads after a very successful season in which the team played ten matches and recorded five victories. The courageous and bold decision to field a Junior ‘B’ team for the first time in the championship since 2001 had been vindicated. Great credit is  due to manager Martin Walsh and his selectors Fergus England & Ned Darcy for all their work. All fixtures were fulfilled and getting twenty-two players to tog out on a Wednesday evening at 6.30pm in Dolla was an achievement in itself.

Team: Tom Austin, Jack Quinlisk, Fearghal Doheny, David Mooney, Ross Austin, Jonathan Cahill, Sean Hayes, Cathal McIntyre, Rory Grace, Cian Hayes, Cormac Mannion (1-3, 1-0 penalty, 0-1 65, 0-1 free), Matthew Moyles (1-0),  Pat, Conway (0-7, 0-5 frees), Martin Grace (1-0), Lucas Jones. Subs: Dara O’Looney, Tommy Burriss, Danny Cahalan, Louis Kennedy,  William Jones.

U19

We lost out to Borris-Ileigh in the North ‘A’ Final on a 0-24 to 0-19 scoreline in Nenagh. We had the aid of the strong breeze in the first half and led 0-10 to 0-5 at the interval. Early in the second half, Charlie Kennedy was forced to retire with an injured ankle. With ten minutes left, Borris-Ileigh led by two points and looked set for victory. MacDonaghs rallied to draw level, and Cathal McIntyre pointed to put us in the lead in the sixtieth minute. Borris-Ileigh levelled the game with a free, and the game went to extra time. Kilruane ran out of steam in the in extra time, and Borris-Ileigh claimed the title. It had been a tremendous effort by the team that  just came up short.

Team: Tom Austin, Paul Molloy, Cathal England (Capt), Cormac Kennedy, Hugo Healy, Cian Moyles, Eamonn Coonan, Brian O’Meara, Charlie Kennedy (0-1), Cillian Healy (0-2), Shane Cleary (0-4), Cathal McIntyre (0-1), Michael Hennelly (0-1), Michael Cleary (0-10, 0-6 frees, 0-2 65), Tommy O’Meara. Sub: Jack Quinlisk.

Minor

We made our exit from the  ‘A’ championship after a two-point loss to Roscrea in the quarter-final that was played in Borrisoleigh. Result: Roscrea 0-25, Kilruane MacDonaghs 2-17. Roscrea had the better of matters in the first half and led by 0-11 to 1-7 at the interval. Andrew Austin scored the goal in the fourteenth minute. Both sides hurled better in the second half, and it  was a ding-dong struggle for supremacy until the final whistle. Heading into the final quarter, MacDonaghs led by three points with Charlie Kennedy scoring as peach of a goal in the forty-first minute. As the clock ticked into the red, the teams were level, and extra time was looming. However, two late Roscrea frees gave them victory. Despite this loss, it had been a very good campaign for our minors. They went undefeated in the group stage and have made considerable progress since their U15 days.  Thanks to Alan Carroll, Eoin Kennedy and Martin Walsh for their work with this group.

Team: Dara Gaynor, James Gould, Tommy Gaynor, Tadhg Teefey, Stasik Setikas, Cormac Kennedy, Mark Cleary, Hugo Healy, Jack O’Meara, Oisín Carroll, Tommy O’Meara, Charlie Kennedy, Gerard O’Looney, Andrew Austin, Lukah Williams.  Subs: Senan O’Leary, Shay Óg Kennedy, Karl Ryan.
