After last Sunday’s 2-19 to 2-15 victory over Annacarty we have topped the group secured a place in the County quarter-finals. This was the fourth successive victory over Annacarty. The previous three were: 1944 County semi-final 2-5 to 1-4; 2015 County quarter-final 1-22 to 1-14; and 2018 1-19 to 0-16. The westerners had nine points to spare over Thurles in the first round so there was never going to be much between the sides in this latest encounter.

MacDonaghs settled quickly and playing some delightful hurling they led by 1-8 to 0-2 after the first quarter. Kian O’Kelly had beaten Darragh Mooney at his near post in the 15th minute to raise the first green flag of the game. The second quarter belonged to Annacarty who struck eight points before the interval while the Magpies responded with two white flags. At halftime the momentum seemed to be in Annacarty’s favour although they trailed on a 1-10 to 0-10 scoreline.

On the resumption MacDonaghs took the game by the scruff of the neck and hit 1-3 without reply to open up a nine-point lead. Annacarty kept plugging away but still trailed by nine points with twelve minutes to go and it looked like MacDonaghs would see the game out comfortably down the home straight. However, Annacarty grabbed two goals inside two minutes and with eight minutes left the gap was cut to two. To their credit, MacDonaghs kept their composure and finished strongly to record a four-point victory.

Team: Seamus Hennessy, Eoin Hogan, Darragh Peters, Jack Peters, Willie Cleary (0-1), Niall O’Meara, Craig Morgan, Kieran Cahill, Ray McLoughney (0-1), Kian O’Kelly (1-0),  Cian Darcy (0-9, 0-1 from 65 7 0-5 from frees), Jerome Cahill (0-2), Thomas Cleary (0-4), Conor Cleary (1-2) and Sean McAdams. Subs: James Cleary and Mark O’Neill.

Attention now switches to the North quarter-final where we play Kiladangan in Nenagh on Saturday at 4.00pm. With the team hit with a number of injuries they face a huge task against a side that can select from its full complement of players. We urge all our supporters to get to Nenagh on Saturday and get behind the lads. The team have responded to every challenge this year and are primed to give everything on Saturday. Support will be vital.  Play your part on Saturday and help drive the team over the line.

MacDonagh's were on the road early Sunday morning for a  Tournament in Craughwell. After playing three tough group games MacDonaghs were still unbeaten. This set us up for a final against the home team.  Another great panel performance saw us coming out on top. Well done to a great group of boys. Thanks very much to Craughwell for a very well-run tournament.
