U21

In the second round of the ‘B’ hurling championship, we recorded a 2-13 to 0-8 victory over Lorrha Rovers in Tony Reddin Park. This  victory secures the top spot in the group and a place in the semi-final with one game left to play.  Coincidentally, we posted exactly the same score (2-13) in the first round victory over Burgess. For this game, the management made one enforced change with Michael Hennelly coming in for the injured Paul Molloy.

MacDonaghs began on the front foot with Michael Hennelly pointing inside the first minute. A minute later, Cillian Healy raised our second white flag, In the fourth minute, Lorrha Rovers opened their  account with a point from Liam Dwyer. MacDonaghs fired over three points in succession from Jack Mulcahy, Cillian Healy and Paul Dwyer. A goal from Eoin Caroll in the 15th minute put Kilruane 1-5 to 0-1 ahead and firmly in the driving seat. In truth, we should have been out the gap  at this stage as we shot some uncharacteristic wides from good positions. In the first half, we had a tally of ten wides.  Perhaps the change to old time had an effect on the radar. In the second quarter, our defence and midfield continued to dominate, and at the interval, the new electronic scoreboard  - it was having its second outing – showed the visitors ahead by 1-8 to 0-2. Interestingly, in the first half, neither side scored from a free with referee Alan Graham letting the play flow while remaining firmly in control

On the resumption, Lorrha Rovers had their best spell on the game, shooting three points inside the opening seven minutes, including a brace from Conor Kennedy (a free and a 65). An Eoin Caroll free in the 40th minute steadied matters for the  Magpies and when Michael Cleary found the net in the 44th minute, the game was effectively over as a contest. In the final quarter, the management emptied the bench and gave players an opportunity to stake a claim for a place in the final group game against Portroe and the semi-final.
