Under-21
MacDonaghs secured top spot in the group and a semi-final berth with a hard-fought 2-14 to 1-8 away win over Ballina. The nine-point margin flattered Kilruane, who added 1-2 in the closing minutes. A long-range point from Charlie Kennedy and a Brian O’Meara free gave MacDonaghs a bright start, but scores were at a premium and the sides were level at 0-3 apiece after seventeen minutes. Another Brian O’Meara free and a Michael Cleary point from play put the Magpies two ahead before Gary Slevin’s twenty-first-minute goal gave Ballina a one-point lead. They added a point, but Kilruane rallied with scores from Brian O’Meara (free), Michael Cleary and Cillian Healy to lead 0-8 to 1-4 at half-time.
The teams exchanged two points each after the restart. In the forty-third minute, a fine run by Tommy O’Meara set up Michael Cleary, who finished to the net with aplomb. MacDonaghs led by four with two minutes of normal time remaining, as Ballina missed several chances to narrow the gap. Cillian Healy added a point, then slipped behind the Ballina defence in added time to fire home a goal after a clever pass from Dara O’Looney. Charlie Kennedy’s fourth point sealed the nine-point win. Moneygall will be firm favourites in the semi-final after three impressive group performances. However, if we play faster direct hurling against our physically stronger opponents, we are in with a chance, even without the services of Tommy O’Meara (injured) and Paul Molloy (suspended).
