U21

In the first round of the ‘B’ hurling championship, we recorded a 2-13 to 1-15 victory over Burgess in MacDonagh Park, which was in its usual pristine condition after Michael Hogan had trimmed the grass on Friday. Before the game, a minute’s silence was observed in memory of  Breda Conneally, mother of Burgess player Luke. The game was played in windy conditions as Storm Ashley bared its teeth. The diagonal wind affected the shooting on both sides.

Eoin Carroll opened the scoring with a pointed free after a foul on Michael Cleary. Burgess were soon on level terms when David Nealon was on target from a free. In the fourth minute, Paul Dwyer  did the spadework for a Michael Cleary goal. The teams swopped a brace of points before Paul Dwyer raised MacDonaghs second green flag in the ninth minute. The Magpies were now in the ascendancy and with twenty minutes gone led by 2-8 to 0-4. Burgess dominated the rest  of the half, scoring 1-4 in reply to a solitary pointed free from Eoin Carroll. The Burgess goal came from Joe Dwyer in the 25th minute. At the interval,  the scoreboard read 2-9 to 1-8 in favour of Kilruane.

The visitors had the assistance of the diagonal wind in the second half and inside two minutes had reduced the deficit with points from David Nealon (free) and Eoin Grace.  Further points from

Joe Dwyer and Eoin Grace left the teams level with nineteen minutes left. MacDonaghs had spurned a number of scoring chances, and the momentum was with Burgess. Michael Cleary steadied the ship with a pointed free after a foul on Jack Mulcahy in the 46th minute. Two minutes later, Cillian Healy raised a white flag to give the Magpies a two-point cushion. David Nealon  and  Michael Cleary were on target from frees. In the 60th minute, David Nealon scored the equaliser from a free. A draw seemed the mostly likely outcome, but deep into added time, Michael Cleary slotted over the winning point after a foul on Eoin Carroll.

Team: Kevin Naughnane (Capt),  Danny Cahalan, Ciaran Coffey, Paul Molloy, Cian Hayes, Cian Moyles, Shane Cleary, Cillian Healy (0-1), Cathal England, Jack Mulcahy, Eoin Carroll (0-5 frees), Brian O’Meara (0-3), Paul Dwyer (1-0), Sean Hayes, Michael Cleary (1-4, 0-3 frees). Subs: Ross Austin, Michael Hennelly, Johnny Naughnane. Also on the panel: Tom Austin, Cathal McIntyre, Fearghal Doheny, Cormac Gaynor, Fiachradh Ahearne Woods, Jack Quinlisk, William Jones.

This was probably the youngest U21 team that we ever fielded. Just three of the starting fifteen were on their last year, two more were U20, two U19, four U18, and four U17.
