Kevin Gaynor R.I.P.

Kevin passed to his eternal reward on 29th October just a few days short of his 83rd birthday. He was born in Melbourne, Australia on 2nd November 1935. His father Mick had been very active in the War of Independence and emigrated to Australia in 1924. Mick married Eileen Murphy in Australia. Five of the Gaynor children were born there. In 1939 Mick Gaynor and family returned to Ireland to take over his uncle’s farm in Rapla, Kilruane.  Kevin attended the local national school and then headed to St. Flannan’s College to complete his secondary education. In 1952 Kevin played corner-back on the MacDonaghs minor team that won the club’s first divisional title in that grade with a victory over Nenagh. His younger brother Des was also a member of the panel. Two years later he was part of the MacDonaghs junior panel that won the North title by getting the better of Kilcommon in the final. The same year he was full-back on the St. Flannan’s team that had a famous victory over Thurles C.B.S. in the Harty Cup final in the Gaelic Grounds, Limerick. The Flannan’s side also included his club colleague Gerry McCarthy and Donie Nealon of Burgess. Jimmy Doyle was the goalkeeper for the Thurles outfit. Kevin joined the Garda Siochána in 1958 and served for thirty-seven years in the force. He was stationed in Pearse Street for most of that time. During his career the Commissioner gave him the responsibility for firearm licensing in Dublin. Kevin had a keen interest in hunting and always came back to Rapla for the start of the pheasant shooting season. To his wife Bernadette, sons Tony and Kevin, daughters Avril, Mandy and Amy, brothers Ned, Des and Len, sisters Mary, Julie, Maelisa and Imelda & extended family, sympathy is extended.
