Senior

Junior ‘A’

MacDonaghs chalked up their second successive victory in the North League, overcoming Roscrea in MacDonagh Park on a 2-17 to 1-16 scoreline. A gloomy wet evening made it a challenging encounter for both sides. Kilruane lined out without Eoin Hogan with Mark O’Neill drafted into the side. Cathal England opened a scoring with a point in the second minute. The visitors cancelled this out before Brian O’Meara bisected the posts with a free to nudge the Magpies ahead. A brace of white flags from Roscrea put them one clear. In the eleventh minute, Cian Moyles knifed his way through the Roscrea defence and fired the sliotar to the corner of the net for a peach of a goal. Mark O’Neill tacked on a point to give the home side a two-point advantage. It was a lead they wouldn’t surrender for the remainder of the game. On the cusp of halftime, Cian Moyles struck again with a carbon copy of his first goal to give MacDonaghs a six-point cushion. Roscrea responded with a pair of points to leave the scoreboard reading 2-9 to 0-11 in favour of Kilruane at the break.

Conor Cleary was introduced into the action on the resumption. The scoring slowed in the third quarter. Wing-back Paddy Ryan broke the deadlock in the thirty-eight minute when he  launched a missile over the black spot. Three minutes later, keeper Kevin Naughnane got in on the act when he was on target from a  long-range free. As the clock ticked into the red, MacDonaghs had opened an eight-point gap. Roscrea added 1-1 from frees to leave the Magpies four-point winners at the final whistle. Kilruane had eleven different scorers with 2-13 from coming play.

Team: Kevin Naughnane (0-1 free) Paul Molloy, Eanna Hogan, David O’Sullivan (0-1), Paddy Ryan (0-1), Cormac Doheny, Cormac Kennedy (0-1), Matthew Moyles, Cathal England (0-1), Cillian Healy (0-1), Mark O’Neill (0-4), Cian Moyles (2-0), Charlie Kennedy, Brian O’Meara (0-5, 0-3 frees), Páidí  Williams. Junior ‘B’

Although they were pipped in the closing minutes, the team gave their best performance of  season against Gortnahoe Glengoole with the visitors prevailing on a 4-14 to 2-15 scoreline in the fourth round of the County League. Gortnahoe dominated the opening quarter and led 0-8 to 0-2 after eighteen minutes. With Jack Quinlisk (Man of the Match), Robert Austin and Fearghal Doheny outstanding in the defence, MacDonaghs clawed their way back into the game and trailed 0-8 to 0-6 at the interval. On the restart, a Gortnahoe goal in the thirty-fifth minute put them in the driving seat with a five-point lead. Their advantage stretched to seven before Conor Doheny crashed a twenty metre free to the net in the forty-first minute. The Magpies took control of the game and hit 1-7 without reply in a golden spell to go five clear with five minutes of normal time left. A fortuitous Gortnahoe goal in the fifty-ninth minute game them a lifeline. Two minutes later, a ball broke from a ruck in the Kilruane goalmouth, and Gortnahoe got their third goal to put them two points ahead. Deep into added time, MacDonaghs went hunting for the winning goal. Cathal McIntyre lobbed a free into a packed goalmouth, hoping for a deflection. However, the Gortnahoe defence held firm, and a counter attack resulted in their fourth goal to give them a flattering margin of victory. It had been a terrific effort by the home side that just came up short.

Team: Tom Austin (0-1 free), David Mooney, Eoin England, Jack Quinlisk, Robert Austin, Stephen Cleary, Fearghal Doheny, Cormac Mannion (0-1), Stasik Setkas, Cathal McIntyre (0-6, 0-5 frees, 0-1 65), Cian Hayes (0-1), Conor Doheny (1-1, 1-0 free), Shay Óg Kennedy (0-1), Louis Kennedy, Dara O’Looney. Subs: Oisín O’Meara (0-2), Ross Austin (0-1), Danny Cahalan, Martin Grace (1-1), Johnny Naughnane.

The next round is at home to Ballybacon Grange this Saturday, 9th April, at 7.00pm.

Féile

Our U15 hurlers participated in Division 4 Féile Competition in New Inn. The players and management put in huge effort over the last nine weeks, playing challenge games in Limerick,  Clare, Offaly and Tipperary.

In the first round, we had a 2-7 to 0-4 victory over Rockwell Rovers. A 1-9 to 1-6 victory over Ballinahinch/Templederry in a terrific battle secured a place in final against Loughmore Castleiney. This was a quality match with Loughmore getting a super start,  scoring 1-2 in the first few minutes playing against the breeze.  MacDonaghs  settled and had a great end to the half. The second half was score for score. The Loughmore keeper made an outstanding save at the end, depriving Kilruane of victory. The game finished in a draw, and in extra time, it could have gone either way with Loughmore getting the vital goal. It was a great achievement to reach the final and go so close considering we were without centre-back Ben Williams with Liam Dollery, Aidan Fahy and Darragh Greene also unavailable.
