In the North/Mid League, we booked a semi-final spot after a 7-5 to 4-13 extra-time victory over JK Brackens in Templemore. MacDonaghs showed tremendous grit and determination to grind out a win against a very useful home outfit. Brackens took an early five-point lead, forcing the Kilruane management took remedial action, introducing Shane Cleary to curb the threat of the Brackens full-forward. MacDonaghs went ahead with two quick goals, and the lead changed hands on a number of occasions during the match. The Magpies built up a six-point lead in the middle of the second half, but Brackens replied with 1-3 to level the match at the end of ordinary time.
Both clubs agreed to play extra time to decide which team would qualify for the playoffs as they had finished level on points in the league table. Towards the end of extra time, the visitors were down by two points. Eamonn Coonan, who had moved into the attack, lobbed in the ball into the Brackens square, and it ended up in the net to put Kilruane a point clear. Brackens surged down the field and equalised with a point from a free. Kilruane then worked the ball up the field but kicked a wide. MacDonaghs won the resultant kickout, and with the final attack, Michael Cleary was fouled on the twenty metre line. Michael took the free himself and scored a point from a difficult angle for a right-footed kicker. The final whistle sounded after the kickout.
