Junior
In the first round of the County League, we travelled to Thurles and claimed the points on offer with a 2-14 to 1-11 victory over Sarsfields. To my knowledge, this was the first time a Kilruane MacDonaghs team played in the outside field in Thurles, which has hosted games since 1910. As the players parked behind the Old Stand in Semple Stadium, the sound of a public address system was audible. For a few brief moments, there was a suggestion that our game was being played in the Stadium. However, it was quickly confirmed that our game was destined for the Outside Field as Tipperary and Clare U20 footballers took centre stage each in Tom Semple’s field.
Alan Quinlan and his management team opted to field a youthful side with eight U19s on the starting fifteen, and all eight gave a good account of themselves. Thurles scored their goal in the fifth minute to lead 1-1 to 0-1. With twenty-two minutes gone, the teams were tied on 0-7 to 1-4. MacDonaghs finished the half strongly to lead 0-11 to 1-4 at the break. Goals from Niall Shinners in the 43rd minute and Páidí Williams in the 51st minute opened a nine-point gap. In between those green flags, Páidí was unlucky to see a daisy-cutter cannon off the butt of the right-hand post with the keeper well beaten. Thurles battled to reduce the deficit, but an impressive Kilruane defence kept them at bay, and there were six points between the sides at the final whistle.
