In the first round of the championship, we came out the right side of a 3-19 to 2-19 scoreline against Roscrea in Borrisoleigh. On a perfect evening for hurling, MacDonagh’s had first use of the light breeze into the scoring goal. Jason Fitzpatrick opened the scoring for Roscrea with a pointed free in the second minute. Goalkeeper Kevin Naughnane bought the sides level with a monster free from inside his own half. A white flag from the impressive Brian O’Meara in the 5th minute put the Magpies ahead for the first time. They were never subsequently behind in the game. With eighteen minutes gone, the teams were level on 0-9 each. Kilruane struck for two goals from Michael Cleary (20th minute) and Cian Moyles (23rd minute) to open up a six-point lead. At the interval, the score was 2-11 to 0-11 in favour of MacDonaghs. Roscrea had kept in the hunt with six-pointed frees – the final tally at the end of the game was eleven Roscrea points from placed balls.
On the restart, both sides swopped a brace of points. In the forty-second minute, Jack Mulcahy, who had been a thorn in the Roscrea defence since the first whistle, was hauled down in the large square. Keeper Kevin Naughnane made the long trek from the goals to blast the penalty to the net. Kilruane had now a seven-point cushion. In the forty-fourth minute, Roscrea thundered back into the game with a goal. A second green flag for Roscrea in the fifty-fifth minute left the teams on level terms. The momentum was now with the opposition, but the Magpies showed grit and determination to outscore Roscrea 0-5 to 0-2 in the final minutes to record a well-deserved three-point victory and bag a pair of valuable points.
