MacDonaghs reached the Division 5 County League final after a hard-fought one-point win over a useful Cashel side in MacDonagh Park. When Shane Hodgins, blew the final whistle, the scoreboard read 0-22 to 1-18 on favour of the home side. For much of the match, however, the visitors looked the more likely winners as Kilruane were not firing on all cylinders.
Cormac Kennedy opened the scoring with a point inside the first minute. Cashel hit back with a goal as the sliotar was whipped to the net after a goalmouth scramble. The West team had the upper hand for the remainder of the half and led by 1-9 to 0-6 at the break. They were more efficient in front of goal in contrast to the Magpies who hit ten wides in the opening half.
Brian O’Meara floated oved a free when action commenced, but Cashel tightened their grip on the game and opened up an eight-point gap. Things were looking ominous for MacDonaghs, but they kept plugging away and reduced the deficit to four down the home straight. The odds were still stacked in favour of Cashel, but Kilruane built up a head of steam and scored the last five points without reply. Kevin Naughnane hit the winner from a long-range free after a foul on Seamus Hennessy. Cashel had a chance to equalise from a free, but the mishit effort dropped short and was cleared to safety. It was a gritty performance by the team to clinch a spot in the Bannon Cup final where Ballybacon Grange will provide the opposition on Tuesday, 23rd June, in Holycross, at 7.30pm.
Team: Kevin Naughnane (0-1 free), Paul Molloy, Eanna Hogan, David O’Sullivan, Paddy Ryan, Eoin Hogan, Cormac Doheny, Cathal England, Cormac Kennedy, Eoin Carroll, Mark O’Neill, Fiachradh Ahearne Woods, Conor Cleary, Brian O’Meara, Charlie Kennedy. Subs: Eamonn Coonan, Seamus Hennnessy.
