Senior
In the penultimate round of the County League we lost to Burgess in Kilcolman on a 4-17 to 1-19 scoreline. Goals win games and Burgess found the onion bag on four occasions in the second half. With the breeze at their back MacDonaghs started brightly and led by 0-5 to 0-1 after 12 minutes. Burgess settled after that and at the interval the Magpies led by 0-8 to 0-7. In truth, MacDonaghs should have been five or six more points ahead but poor shooting proved to be costly.
In the first minute of the second half Kieran Cahill extended the advantage with a point. Almost immediately the Burgess corner-forward took the scenic route in from the left wing and although the threat seemed to have been averted he got his shot away to find the net. MacDonaghs responded with two white flags to lead by a point. Burgess struck for another goal in the 34th minute to go three in front. There was little between the sides at this stage and with 12 minutes left Burgess were a point ahead. Goals in the 19th and 21st minutes gave the home side a firm grip on the game and they went on to take the points.
With the team under strength every day it has been a very indifferent league for MacDonaghs. However, the absence of so many regulars has given fringe players a great chance to stake a claim for a starting position. It was great to see Brian O’Meara return to action and he came through the game unscathed as did Willie Cleary who was introduced in the final quarter. It is expected that both players will feature with the juniors against Nenagh.
There is going to be fierce competition for places when the inter-county players return to action. The final round at home to Thurles on the weekend of 23rd June will give all players — including some regulars who haven’t been setting the world on fire—a big opportunity to convince the management that they should be given one of the first fifteen jerseys when the championship recommences.

Junior
In the first round of the championship MacDonaghs were just edged out by Knockshegowna in Borrisokane on a 0-17 to 0-15 scoreline. After an unimpressive league MacDonaghs gave a very good account of themselves and were unlucky not to come away with a share of the points. Martin Walsh, Colin England and David Slattery have worked very hard with this team. The players are now beginning to respond and playing a much more direct style of play which suits them.
Knockshegowna had the aid of the light breeze in the first half had a two-point advantage at the interval. The teams were level on six occasions in the second half and two minutes into added time they were still all square. However, Knockshegowna struck with two late points from frees to clinch victory. Before the game a minutes silence was observed in memory of the late Jimmy Noonan, a great servant of the Knockshegowna club. Sympathy is extended to the Noonan family.
At 8.00pm on this Friday MacDonaghs will play Nenagh in the second round. Venue to be confirmed.
Under 12
It was a very busy week for our three teams. De Wets had a 4-6 to 1-2 victory over Borris-Ileigh in Ardcroney. Kilruane got the better of Lorrha on a 2-7 to 1-4 scoreline at the same venue and chalked up a 4-6 to 2-4 victory away to Portroe. MacDonaghs had lost out to Portroe by 2-2 to 0-6.
Cumann na mBunscol
All our parish schools are represented in the Cumann na mBunscol County finals in Semple Stadium next week. On Tuesday, 18th June Ardcroney take on Knockavilla in the U11 C camogie final at 10.50am and at 12.20pm it is the turn of the Ardcroney boys who face Rosegreen in the U11 C decider. To complete a busy day for Ardcroney the U13 camogie team are in action against Borrisoleigh in the C final at 2.20pm.
On Wednesday, 19th June Cloughjordan Schools are up against Two Mile Borris in the U13 D hurling final while Kilruane play Upperchurch in the U11 D hurling final at 5.20pm. Best of luck to all the schools.
Primary Game
Best wishes to Cian Moyles Kilruane N.S. who will line out with the Tipperary Primary Game hurling team against Limerick in Semple Stadium on Sunday.
Cul Camp
The annual Kellogg’s Cul Camp takes place in MacDonagh Park 1st to 5th July. All applications must be done online at www.kelloggsculcamps.gaa.ie. The Camp is open to boys and girls aged 6 to 13 years. Strictly no U6s. Activities commence at 10.00am each day and finish at 2.00pm.The cost remains the same as last year: 1st child €60; 2nd child €55; €45 for third and subsequent children. The co-ordinator this year is Michael O’Meara.
