In the first round of the championship, we lost 2-14 to 1-15 against Borris-Ileigh in Roscrea. Rain on a firm surface led to difficult underfoot conditions. MacDonaghs had the aid of the breeze in the first half, but it was Borris-Ileigh who struck the first major blow with a goal in the seventh minute. In the tenth minute, keeper Kevin Naughnane shipped a heavy tackle to the head, and he was forced to leave the field. Tristan Madden filled in as a temporary substitute until Kevin returned to the fray in the twenty-third minute. After a slow start, MacDonaghs began to find their feet, and Oisín O’Meara raised a green flag in the fourteenth minute. At the interval, the Magpies led by 1-9 to 1-5.
On the resumption, the sides went point for point, and with forty-four minutes gone, Kilruane still held a four-point advantage. In the nineteenth minute, Ross Austin was forced to retire with a knee injury. Borris-Ileigh cut the gap to the minimum with fifty nine minutes gone and struck for the winning goal in the 60th minute. Despite late pressure, we couldn’t bridge the gap. In the second round, we face Ballinahinch this Thursday, 6th July, in Nenagh at 7.30pm.
