Senior

In the first round of the County championship, we recorded a 4-20 to 1-25 victory over Drom & Inch in Templederry. Drom won the toss and elected to give MacDonaghs the opportunity to play into the “scoring goal” in the first half. Willie Cleary drew first blood in the 2nd minute when he slotted over a free after a foul on Jerome Cahill. Two minutes later, Jerome raised the first green flag of the evening  when he rifled the sliotar to the net past Eoin Collins. In the 9th minute, Drom struck back with a goal from Seamus Callanan. In the 13th minute, Kilruane suffered a blow when Conor Cleary was forced to retire with a knee injury. Sean McAdams replaced him.

At the end of the first quarter, the  teams were tied on 1-3 each. In the 17th  minute, Thomas Cleary buried the sliotar in the onion bag. Two minutes later, spectators were treated to a rare sight of an endangered species, the lesser spotted “humus iecit” better known in English as the ground shot, when Cian Darcy whipped a daisy cutter to the net. At the interval, the scoreboard read 3-9 to 1-12 in favour of the Magpies.

On the restart, Kian O’Kelly notched Kilruane’s fourth goal to extend the lead to six points. At the end of the third quarter, MacDonaghs had a seven-point advantage. With fifty-eight minutes gone, Drom had cut the deficit to three and attacked in search of an equaliser. Willie Cleary fired over the insurance point from a free in the 62nd minute to give Kilruane a four-point victory.  In the next round, we play Borris-Ileigh, who will enter the game as favourites after their victory over Toomevara. Hopefully, the lads can rise to the challenge.
