We collected our first points in the championship with a merited 3-18 to 1-23 victory over Nenagh in Toomevara. A goal from Brian O’Meara (14th minute) and a brace of green flags from Eoin Carroll (18th & 19th minutes) helped lay the foundation for this hard-fought victory. Just before the interval, Jonathan Cahill was forced to retire injured, and Ray McLoughney, home on vacation, entered the fray. Ray was to raise two valuable white flags in the second half. We led by three points at the break with the scoreboard reading 3-6 to 1-9 in our favour.
A leg injury ruled out Brian O’Meara for the second half, with Kevin Shinners taking his place on the edge of the square. Ten minutes into the second half, Nenagh drew level, and the omens were looking ominous for the Magpies. However, Kilruane responded and refused to cede the initiative. Nenagh did hit the front in the 60th minute, and for the third game in succession, it seemed we might be pipped at the post. Not so on this occasion as MacDonaghs fired over three points on the trot to edge two ahead. Nenagh piled on the pressure in added time to cut the gap to the minimum but couldn’t engineer the equaliser.
