After a 0-26 to 0-23 quarter-final loss to Borris-Ileigh in the North championship, attention now focuses on the first round of the County championship against Toomevara, which is scheduled for the weekend of 30th July. MacDonaghs started sluggishly in this encounter and Borris-Ileigh, against the breeze, led by 0-3 to 0-0 after three minutes. MacDonaghs improved as the half progressed, but at the end of the first quarter Borris-Ileigh had a four-point cushion. In the second quarter, MacDonaghs outscored Borris-Ileigh 0-7 to 0-4 to leave them trailing by the minimum at the break. Both sides had goal chances in the opening half with Jerome Cahill unfortunate to see his goal disallowed for a very debatable square ball infringement.

The sides went score for score in the second half and were level on no less than seven occasions. The turning point of the game came in the 63rd minute. Borris-Ileigh led by a point at this stage. Craig Morgan was surging forward in the attack when he was fouled. The free wasn’t given. Almost immediately, Borris-Ileigh won a free that resulted in a point. MacDonaghs had to go hunting for a goal, but Borris-Ileigh struck the insurance point for victory.

MacDonaghs had nine different scorers and struck fourteen points from play.

U19

A 4-8 to 0-4 home victory over Kiladangan secured a place in the semi-final of the ‘B’ football championship. There was very little between the sides in the first half with Kilruane 0-4 to 0-2 ahead at the break. It wasn’t until the final quarter that MacDonaghs breached the Kiladangan defence for the crucial goals that tilted the balance of the game.

Team: Johnny Naughnane, Simon Austin, Danny Cahalan, Sean Hayes, Paul Molloy, Eamonn Coonan, Cathal England, Cillian Healy (0-2), Cian Moyles (1-0), Andrew Hayes (2-0), Jack Mulcahy, Tristan Madden (0-2 frees), Michael Cleary (0-3 frees), Eoin Carroll (1-1, 0-1 45), Brian O’Meara. Subs: Shane Cleary, Ray Quinlivan, Cian Hayes, Tom Austin, Colin Doris,

The semi-final takes place on Wednesday, 19th July, with time and date to be confirmed.
