Joe Williams 1939 - 2025

Joe  was born in Main Street, Cloughjordan in October 1939. He attended the local National School and later St. Flannan’s Secondary School in Ennis.

Joe, lining out at centre-forward,  won a North Juvenile (U15) medal in 1951 when Kilruane overcame Moneygall on a 5-3 to 3-1 scoreline in Borrisokane. He pocketed a pair of Harty Cup medals (1957 & 1958) with St. Flannan's. 8,000 attended the 1958 final in the Gaelic Grounds, Limerick, which saw Flannan’s record a  6-2 to 3-7 victory over Limerick CBS. Joe added an All-Ireland Colleges medal in 1958 when Flannan’s had 3-10 to 0-2 victory over St. Kieran’s, Kilkenny in Thurles. He played left corner-back on that victorious side. Charley McLoughney, Ardcroney was also a member of the panel.

Joe won his first North senior medal in 1959 when MacDonaghs had an 0-11 to 1-4 victory over Toomevara in the final. Joe lined out at full-back while his brother Sean was corner-forward on that team. Another brother Neil played with Toomevara.  The Guardian reported that “Joe Williams gave another superb display at full-back”.  He collected his second North senior medal in 1965 when Kilruane had a 3-10 to 5-2 victory over Lorrha in the decider. Once again, Joe wore the number three jersey. His brother Sean netted the winning goal in a dramatic finish.

Joe worked with the P&T, later Telecom Éireann and Eircom. He married Ita O’Donoghue, Killarney in 1969, and they settled in Coolock. When the family relocated to Skerries, Joe joined the local Harps club and spent many years volunteering as the bar manager.  He was an accomplished tin whistle and mouth organ player with his music enlivening many a social gathering.

Sympathy is extended to his sons Gerry and Ciarán, his daughters Teresa and Eimear, his brothers Neil and Pat and the Williams family. Suaimhneas síoraí dá anam.
