Under 21
A 2-16 to 1-11 home victory over Newport secured a place in the North final against Burgess. The visitors dominated the early exchanges and were not flattered to lead 0-5 to 0-2 at the end of the first quarter. In the sixteenth minute, Jack Mulcahy set up Brian O’Meara for a well-taken goal to bring the sides level. Four minutes later, Newport raised a green flag to restore their three-point advantage. The Magpies hit a purple patch as the interval approached. In a three-minute spell, they rattled off 1-4 to surge four points ahead. Charlie Kennedy did the spade work for the goal with Jack Mulcahy tapping home from close range. Cillian Healy, Brian O’Meara (2) and Charlie Kennedy chipped in with the points. A Cillian Collins free for Newport on the cusp of half-time cut the deficit to three with the scoreboard reading 2-7 to 1-7 in favour of the Magpies.
On the resumption, MacDonaghs wrestled control of the game. Points from Michael Cleary (3), Brian O’Meara, Sean Hayes and Shane Cleary, punctuated by a brace from Newport, put MacDonaghs eight clear at the end of the third quarter. Heading down the home straight, defences were in the ascendancy, and at the final whistle, Kilruane had an eight-point cushion.
