Under 21

MacDonaghs qualified for the semi-final with a 3-15 to 1-5 victory over Moneygall/Clonakenny in Toomevara. Sickness ruled out Stephen Cleary, so the selectors handed Tomás Hogan the number three jersey and Jerome Cahill slotted in at centre-back. MacDonaghs, with the aid of a light diagonal breeze, dictated matters from the start. Cian Darcy hit the first three points; one from play, another from a free and a peach of an effort from a line ball. Then Conor Cleary galloped through the defence to raise a green flag and after ten minutes there was a gap of six points between the sides. Moneygall/Clonakenny had plenty of possession but got little change from the Kilruane defence. Poor shooting — they hit eight wides in the first half — didn’t help their cause. As the game entered added time in the first half MacDonaghs struck two decisive blows. James Cleary cut in from the right corner, offloaded the sliotar to Conor Cleary who stuck it in the onion bag. Moments later Brendan McAdams was fouled in the large square and Cian Darcy made no mistake from the resultant penalty. The Magpies adjourned to the dressing room with a healthy 3-7 to 0-2 lead. Although Moneygall/ Clonakenny fired over a point on the resumption they couldn’t eat into the deficit. At one stage MacDonaghs had extended the lead to sixteen points. Moneygall/Clonakenny raised a green flag before the finish, but the Magpies had their semi-final spot already secured. Team: Conor Doheny, Bob Dooley, Tomás Hogan, Tom Dooley, Conor Austin, Jerome Cahill, Craig Morgan, Caoilainn Conroy, Darragh Peters, (0-3), James Cleary (0-3), Conor Cleary (2-1), Finnian Mannion,  Cormac Mannion, Brendan McAdams and Cian Darcy (1-8..Penalty, 5 frees and line ball). Subs: Nathan Ryan, Niall Shinners, Kevin Oakley and Sean Cleary. MacDonaghs take on Roscrea in the semi-final on Sunday in Moneygall at 2.00pm. Your support would be appreciated.
