Well done to Craig Morgan and the Tipperary senior team on their victory over Waterford. Commiserations to Charlie Kennedy and the Tipperary minor football team that lost to Derry. Charlie saw action as a second-half substitute.

Junior ‘A’

We finished the campaign with a 2-13 to 0-14 victory over Roscrea in St. Cronan’s Park. This put us second in the group. However, only the top team qualifies for the semi-final,  so attention now switches to the first round of the championship against the same opposition on Friday, 20th June. In mediterranean conditions, MacDonaghs dominated the opening quarter and led by 1-6 to 0-1 after twelve minutes.  Michael Cleary scored the goal in the ninth minute when he rounded his marker on the endline and blasted the sliotar to the net. Kilruane went seventeen minutes without troubling the scoreboard operator, and Roscrea clawed their way back into the game to trail by 1-6 to 0-6 after twenty-five minutes. Eventually, Shane Cleary lofted over a point in the twenty-sixth minute to end the barren spell. At the break, the scoreboard read 1-7 to 0-7 in favour of the Magpies.

Roscrea had a light breeze at their backs in the second half, but it was MacDonaghs who were quickly into their stride again with a brace of pointed frees from Kevin Naughnane and Michael Cleary. With forty-three minutes on the clock, the home team had cut the deficit to three. A goal from Oisín O’Meara in the forty-fourth minute gave Kilruane a four-point cushion. With three minutes of normal time left, the lead had been extended to seven.  Roscrea applied late pressure, but a resolute MacDonaghs rearguard kept their line intact.

A notable feature of this game was that goalkeeper Kevin Naughnane converted four long-range frees. I think this was a first for a Kilruane netminder.

Team: Kevin Naughnane (0-4 frees), Paul Molloy, Eanna Hogan, David O’Sullivan, Paddy Ryan, Cormac Doheny, Cathal England, Cathal McIntyre (0-1), Shane Cleary (0-1), Cillian Healy (0-1), Oisín O’Meara (1-1), Fiachradh Ahearne Woods, Michael Cleary (1-3, 0-3 frees), Kevin Shinners, Micheal Hennelly (0-1). Subs: Páidí Williams (0-1), Conor Doheny, Cian Hayes, Cormac Gaynor, Jack Mulcahy, Kevin Oakley.

After recording two victories in the opening games, we found the going tough against a strong Lorrha team in Tony Reddin Park and came out the wrong side of a 4-14 to 1-7 scoreline. The home side scored two early goals and were in control for the remainder of the game. The result has to be put into perspective as it was our third team against Lorrha’s second outfit. On a positive note, a panel of twenty-two players saw action, no mean feat on a Tuesday evening in Lorrha. The next game is at home to Moneygall this weekend. Check social media for confirmation of this fixture.

Team: Tom Austin, Danny Cahalan, Fearghal Doheny, David Mooney, Ross Austin (0-1), Cormac Gaynor, Sean Quinlan, Conor Doheny (0-1 free), Cathal McIntyre, Robert Austin, Martin Grace, William Jones, Dara O’Looney, Niall Shinners (1-4, 0-2 frees), Pat Conway. Subs: Kevin Oakley, Ray Quinlivan, Jack Quinlisk, Tommy Burriss, Lucas Jones, Cormac Mannion, Tomás Hogan (0-1).
