The second round of the championship brought no joy with a 2-14 to 1-13 loss to Burgess in Nenagh. In the first half Burgess were dominant and led by eight points at the break with the score 2-8 to 0-6 in their favour. MacDonaghs had a shaky start to the second half, conceding two points inside four minutes, but thundered back into the game with a goal from Niall Shinners in the 41st minute. However, Burgess always had that bit in reserve and were deserving winners. Team: Conor Doheny, Tom Dooley, Cormac Williams, Colm Williams, Caoilainn Conroy, Tomás Hogan, Bob Dooley, Conor Austin (0-1), Cormac Mannion, Alan Darcy (0-1), Mark O’Meara (0-7 incl 0-5 from frees), Robert Austin, Eoin Williams (0-2), Paddy Ryan (0-1) and Conor Lillis (0-1). Sub: Niall Shinners (1-0). The next game will be against Knockshegowna on the weekend of 23rd June.
Féile
Last weekend our U14 hurlers headed to Galway for Féile na nGael. Our host club was Liam Mellows. On Friday evening a 2-5 to 1-7 victory over Moycullen (Galway) got two points on the board. On Saturday morning St. Jude’s (Dublin) proved too strong with a 4-9 to 2-1 victory. MacDonaghs rebounded from this reverse by getting the better of Liam Mellows on a 4-3 to 0-5 scoreline in the final group game. This result ensured qualification for the quarter-final where after an absorbing tussle MacDonaghs came out the wrong side of a 1-8 to 1-6 scoreline against Mount Leinster Rangers (Carlow). That evening a barbeque and disco helped soothe the pain of defeat. Thanks to the players, officials and supporters who were tremendous ambassadors for the club. Thanks to our genial hosts Liam Mellows who ensured that it was a fantastic occasion for all who ventured west.
