County Final:
On the 21st of November a cavalade of cars headed for the Ragg for County final against hot favourites Cashel. A game deferred by one week due to the inclement weather which saw Kilruane outplayed by an experienced strong Cashel side.
The opening stages of the game were even with both teams taking time to settle on the ball. Kilruane claimed the first score. A foul on Lianne O’ Kelly in the 7th minute saw Roisin convert the resulting free. However within 30 seconds a dangerous ball dropped on the Kilruane full back line, and Cashel nipped in to nudge the ball to the net. Kilruane would not relinquish the lead from this moment on. As the first half progressed the physical size and strength of the south side became apparent. Our girls passed up some scoring chances including some green flag opportunities and you sensed it wasn’t going to be their day. The half time score finished 2-06 to 1 point.
Cashel returned brightly in the second half brightly scoring 1-02 unanswered in the first ten minutes. There was much to admire in the workrate of the Kilruane defence.
Niamh Costello and Gillian Mc Sharry never gave up while Aoife O’ Sullivan and Emma Cleary made some impressive blocks. Even with captain Georgianna Finn lording procedings at centre back, when Cashel soloed the ball forward it caused panic in the Kilruane defence. Cashel were simply too strong in all departments and chipped away at the scoreboard to extend their advantages in the closing stages and leave them deserving champions. Kilruane played with desire and passion throughout the game. Lianne O’ Kelly proved the Mc Donagh’s never die attitude striking between the posts to take the final score of the game in the 30th minute. The game finished 5-14 to 2 points.
