The U16 team played the 1st round of the championship away to Newport on Thursday last. Playing against the wind in the first half, Kilruane were under pressure from the start. However, our backs stood firm especially Sarah O'Sullivan at centre-back. Roisin Cahill was outstanding at centrefield and one of her great solos lead to Lianne O'Kelly scoring a goal after 20 minutes. Having gone in at half-time 1-1 to 0-6, Kilruane conceded a goal within seconds of the restart when Newport's Keely Lenihan gave goalie Sorcha Heenan no chance with a pile-driver from 20 metres out. Goals from Grainne Gibson and Caroline Hill and a great point from centre-forward Emma Cleary gave Kilruane the initiative with five minutes to go and it looked good when Lianne O'Kelly added another point. However, Newport rallied after Kilruane lost Sarah O'Sullivan with a hand injury and two Keely Lenihan points gave a share of the spoils on a cold night in Newport. The final score Kilruane 3-3, Newport 1-9. Next match in the championship is on Thursday 18th against Nenagh.
