Camogie Feile Report

Last weekend was a great occasion for Kilruane Camogie Club and our U14 feile team. Our club hosted Newmarket-on-Fergus club who arrived in Cloughjordan on Friday last. The first match was between our visitors and our own club captained by Nuala Ryan. This was a keenly fought contest between two very even teams. Thanks to two goals scored by Roisin Cahill and Shauna Tooher, which put us back in contention. However, Newmarket were the stronger team and won the game with a one point margin. After the game, our host families took the girls back to their house and they returned to Cloughjordan at 5.30pm for the trip by bus to Birr. The Feile parade commenced at 7.30pm with over two hundred feile teams and twenty bands passing the reviewing stand in Market Square. Captain Nuala Ryan was presented with a Feile Plaque. The Kilruane Banner was carried by Claire Kennedy and Lisa Cahill with the U14 feile panel marching behind followed by our visitors, Newmarket-on-Fergus.

On Saturday morning, both teams travelled to Kilcolman to play the other 2 teams in our group, Burgess and Douglas in Co. Cork. Once again, our team put in a tremendous effort against two very strong ‘A’ teams but victory evaded them. Well done to the entire panel and to the management team of Katy Starr and Freddie Williams who prepared the team for this weekend. Douglas in Co. Cork were the winners from our group and they were crowned Feile Champions on Sunday in Tullamore by beating St. Vincent’s Dublin in the final. Refreshments were provided by the Burgess and Kilruane ladies to the teams, team management, parents and supporters. Once the matches were concluded, the girls once again returned to the host families. Both teams dressed in their Feile tracksuits attended 7.30pm Mass in Cloughjordan on Saturday evening where Fr. Burke extended a warm welcome to them. The final function of the weekend was the disco, which was hosted by Burgess club in Kilcolman. All four teams attended and it was a fitting end to a brilliant weekend.

Sunday morning 10am came quickly and it was time for the Newmarket team and management to leave Cloughjordan for their trip back to Clare. Tired and tearful-eyed girls exchanged phone numbers and promises to keep in touch with their new friends in Clare. Philip Heenan, Club Chairman, thanked everyone for making the weekend so special and Newmarket club for their courteous friendship.

Thanks to the host families, officers and committee of the Camogie Club, the ladies who looked after the catering and everyone who helped out in any way to make this weekend happen. Thanks to Kilruane Hurling Club for the use of their facilities during the weekend, a special thanks to Pat Williams for having the facilities in pristine condition.

Sean Gleeson from the Newmarket Club thanked Kilruane for their hospitality and complimented everyone on the wonderful weekend. He presented club chairman, Philip Heenan with a beautiful wall plaque for the club and each host family also received a gift from Newmarket Club. This weekend has left fond memories in the young minds of all the Feile team of 2009, which will be cherished and remembered for many years to come.
