Our ‘A’ team opened the championship with a hard-fought 2-17 to 2-15 away win over Burgess. Cian Moyles, Jack Mulcahy and Fearghal Doheny were unavailable for selection. Playing against the breeze in the first half, MacDonaghs led 1-5 to 0-2 after the opening quarter, helped by Michael Cleary’s fine individual goal in the 12th minute. Burgess got a foothold in the game, and they struck four unanswered points. Tommy O’Meara halted their momentum by surging up field to split the posts. Kilruane led 1-8 to 0-10 at the interval.
Scores were at a premium in the third quarter, and after fifty-six minutes the Magpies led 1-13 to 0-13. Corner-forward Michael Hennelly then slipped his marker and rifled the sliotar into the corner of the net, giving MacDonaghs a six-point cushion and heading for victory. However, Joe O’Dwyer struck goals in the 28th and 31st minutes, leaving Kilruane supporters anxiously watching the clock. Deep into injury time, we held a one-point lead before Brian O’Meara converted a free for the insurance score. Kilcoleman is never an easy place to get the better of the home side, so the players and management will be pleased to have secured both points. However, they will know improvement is needed before facing a formidable Nenagh side in the second round this Sunday, 18th October in MacDonagh Park, Cloughjordan, at 12.00pm.

Our ‘A’ team ended the season with a 2-16 to 0-6 home victory over Nenagh Éire Óg in the Shield Final. The same sides met in last year’s U13 Shield Final and were level after extra time before a “Golden Point” from a Mark Gaynor free secured victory for MacDonaghs. This time, Kilruane took control from the opening whistle, scoring four points before Nenagh opened their account in the 13th minute. With Tommy Ryan in excellent form, the Magpies led 0-11 to 0-2 at half-time. Kilruane remained firmly in command as the half-back line of Conn Foley, Mark Gaynor and David Walsh dominated. Shay Ryan’s goal in the 52nd minute put the result beyond doubt. After the match, referee Rody Kennedy presented the trophy to captain Mark Gaynor. Congratulations to the players and management on ending the season on a high.
