Camogie Junior A League semi-final 2013
06 May 2013 by Gilbert WilliamsDrom 0-11 Kilruane 1-6
Unfortunately a place in the Junior A League final was not to be, after our girls had to give way to a stronger Drom side in their semi-final clash on Saturday last. Very little separated the two sides on the scoreboard for most of the game. Indeed it was Kilruane who got on the scoreboard first, when nippy corner forward Shauna Heffernan pointed for the MacDonaghs. However Drom soon settled and added 3 unanswered points. Orla Williams brought the momentum back to Kilruane with a point after good work from Shauna Heffernan. Shauna was on hand again just before half time, when her long ball in deceived the Drom goalie to find the back of the net. This was an important score for Kilruane and put them ahead at half time 1-3 to 0-3.
Kilruane made one change at half time and Niamh Williams was introduced at wing forward. The second half saw Drom in the driving seat, and they pushed hard for scores. Indiscipline in Kilruane’s defence didn’t help the cause, and Drom got the first two scores of the half as a result of frees. Kilruane also had their share of frees but a strong breeze made free-taking difficult. A foul on Maria Hogan however resulted in a pointed free by Marie Ryan. This seemed to kick start Kilruane and Claire Kennedy added a point to put 3 between the sides once again. Drom responded with a point, before Marie Ryan restored the 3 point lead with a fine point from play after great work from Claire Kennedy. This was to be Kilruane’s last score of the day. Drom however found their second wind and finished strong. Although they couldn’t get the better of Kilruane goalkeeper Sarah Coonan, they pushed the defence to their limit and finished with five unanswered points to leave the final score at 0-11 to 1-6. Kilruane tried to stem the tide with the introduction of Georgianna Finn to the half back line. Roisin Cahill was also called into action towards the end. This defeat sees an end to the league campaign. However, there is no doubt that this dedicated bunch of team and management will work hard to regroup and prepare for the upcoming championship.
