Under 21 Final

After a marathon campaign MacDonaghs just came up short in extra time of the replayed final on a 2-18 to 1-13 scoreline. Once again MacDonaghs confounded predictions by pushing the favourites all the way. The Magpies were the much better team in the first half and led by 0-5 to 0-2 after twenty minutes. However, a Mark McCarthy goal gave Toomevara a lifeline and the sides were level at the break with the score 0-6 to 1-3. Toomevara began to get a grip of the game in the second half and went four points ahead. However, MacDonaghs refused to wilt and a goal from Cian Darcy, after his penalty had been saved, brought them right back into the match. With time just up Toomevara edged a point ahead, but a Cian Darcy free left the sides level on 1-11 each at the end of normal time. The injured Jerome Cahill had to move to full-forward for extra time and his loss was to be sorely felt around the middle of the park. After the first period of extra time Toomevara had opened a three-point gap. An Alan Ryan goal in the second period meant that there was no way back for a gallant Magpies outfit. MacDonaghs lost no honour in defeat after two tremendous games against Toomevara. Thanks to the players and the management team of Brian O’Meara, Tom Killackey and Ned Darcy for all their work and effort. Team: Conor Doheny, Bob Dooley, Stephen Cleary, Tom Dooley, Craig Morgan, Tomás Hogan (0-1), Conor Austin, Jerome Cahill (0-1), Darragh Peters, Conor Lillis, Brendan McAdams, Conor Cleary (0-2), Finnian Mannion, James Cleary and Cian Darcy (1-9). Subs: Caoilainn Conroy, Niall Shinners, Cormac Mannion and Nathan Ryan.
