Commiserations to the U14’s who lost out on a place in the Championship County Final to Silvermines by the narrowest of margins on Tuesday last 20th May in The Ragg.
The earlier heavy rain showers had cleared to give a fine evening for the match.
Kilruane started on fire scoring 2-1 in the first six minutes of the match, a goal from Catherine Tighe and 1-1 from Amy Quinlisk. Silvermines responded with 3 points from play before Amy Quinlisk scored a point from a free to put Kilruane 5 points ahead. Silvermines got into their momentum and finished up the first half the stronger team scoring 1-3 unanswered to bring the half-time score to Kilruane 2-2 Silvermines 1-6. In the second half, Silvermines put the pressure on from the restart, scoring 1-2 in the first ten minutes. Mickela McGrath pulled on a ball on the edge of the square to score a goal and Silvermines responded with a point from a 45. At the other end of the field, Amy Quinlisk scored a point from a free before Mickela McGrath was in the right place to pull on another ball to score her second goal of the match. This score put the teams level with less than 10 minutes left. There was intense pressure on both teams backs as the ball moved from end to end. Just on full-time, Silvermines scored a point from a free to put them one point ahead. From the puck out, Kilruane won possession but try as the might, they could not break down the Silvermines defence and into injury time, a great save by the Silvermines goalie and two wides put an end to the U14’s championship campaign for 2014.
