Junior A
On Sunday last the Junior team secured their third consecutive league win when they had a convincing win over Kildangan in Cloughjordan. Playing without a number of regulars, and starting against a strong wind, did little to deter this focused team. Kilruane got off to a great start when a long ball in from Fiona Ryan was blocked down by the Kildangan goalie only as far as the waiting Jennifer Hodgins who made no mistake in securing an opening goal for Kilruane. Kildangan settled however and responded with a point. The Kilruane forwards were enjoying possession but found it hard to get the deserved scores. The Kilruane management team were not slow in making changes, and a positional switch between wing forward Carmel O'Brien and corner forward Patricia Hogan resulted in both players getting the next two Kilruane scores. Goalkeeper Sarah Coonan pulled off some excellent saves in the first half to deny Kildangan. She got great support from her steady full-back Eibhlin Enright, who came out with several great clearances. A final point from Kildangan left the half-time score at 1-2 to 0-4 in Kilruane's favour. Kildangan started the second half brightly and a pointed free brought them level with Kilruane. However, the Kilruane girls were not going to let Kildangan back into the game and made sure of this when Tricia Hogan, who had been working hard throughout, goaled for Kilruane. Full forward Jennifer Hodgins reinforced this with her second goal of the day, another goal where she put the Kildangan goalkeeper under tremendous pressure, and this time handpassed to the back of the net. Corner forwad Katie Quinlisk slotted over her first point of the day. Centre forward Fiona Ryan punished the opposition further when she cleanly caught a Kildangan puck out and returned it straight over the bar. She followed this up with Kilruane's fourth and final goal, after great work from Niamh Williams. A Fiona Ryan free and a Tricia Hogan point from play soon followed, before Fiona Ryan got her final score of the day after a sweet hand pass from hard-working midfielder Shauna Heffernan. Late substitute Orla Williams slotted over Kilruane's final point to leave a final score line of 4-9 to 0-7. The team will be very happy with the performance, not just the result but the way in which it was achieved. The work-rate of all 18 players was steady throughout, none more so than u16 players Eibhlin Enright and Shauna Heffernan who slotted in perfectly at full back and midfield respectively, and will be pushing to keep these places. Having used 29 players in 3 matches, management are now faced with some tough decisions, therefore training remains more important than ever. The next match is excpected to be this weekend against Newport. Team: Sarah Coonan, Niamh Gibson, Eibhlin Enright, Orla Murphy, Aine Kennedy, Hazel Keogh, Lisa Cahill, Shauna Tooher, Shauna Heffernan, Niamh Williams, Fiona Ryan (1-3, 0-1 f), Carmel O'Brien (0-1), Katie Quinlisk (0-1), Jennifer Hodgins (2-0), Patricia Hogan (1-2). Subs: Clodagh Hodgins, Nuala Ryan, Orla Williams (0-1).
